Location Sharing is no longer required! Here's what you need to know.

Updated this week

Do I need to turn off Location Sharing?

No! If you update your app to version 3.13.1, we will automatically opt you out of location sharing. If you still want to keep it on, great! We will no longer be checking anonymized location data for any subscriber.

Where did the "Location Sharing" toggle go?

Since we no longer require location sharing, we have removed the "Location Sharing" toggle from the app (versions 3.13.1 and later). You can always change your location sharing permissions in your Device Settings.

How do I earn Cloud Points now?

To earn Cloud Points, all you need to do is use a little cellular data (scrolling, posting, or using your favorite app!) each month. No more sharing location data required (even though it was always completely anonymized).

You can also rack up more points by referring friends to Helium Mobile and staying on your plan over time.

What's going to happen to my old Location Data?

Your location data was always anonymous and will continue to remain so. We will not sell or share any data with third-parties. We appreciate all of your contributions in helping us create a stronger network.

I was able to earn Cloud Points by sharing my anonymized location? Can I still do this?

As of October 1, 2025, earning Cloud Points by sharing your anonymized location data is not possible. Instead, you must use cellular data each month (scrolling, posting, or using your favorite app!) to earn Cloud Points.

If you subscribed prior to August 1st, 2025 and met all of the requirements to redeem Cloud Points, then there is no change!

If you subscribed after August 1st, 2025, you must use cellular data (scrolling, posting, or using your favorite app!) for a few days to unlock this feature.

*All subscribers must wait 90 days from subscribing to redeem any Cloud Points.

Why did we share our location data in the first place?

Before October 1, 2025, subscribers on the free Zero Plan were required to share anonymized location data exclusively with Helium Mobile (Air and Infinity Plan users could choose to opt in).

This data showed how and where the Helium Network was being used, helping us improve coverage for everyone. Now that the network has grown, we can measure demand through data usage instead. By simply using your cellular data each month, you’re still helping expand coverage across the U.S.—and you’ll earn Cloud Points along the way.
