How to Use Mobile Data

Written by Diandra Rodriguez

If you can’t get online when you’re away from Wi-Fi, cellular (mobile) data may be turned off. Here’s how to turn it on, and what to check if it still isn’t working.

iPhone

These steps work on recent versions of iOS.

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data)

  2. Turn on Cellular Data

  3. Tap Cellular Data Options to adjust:

    • Data Roaming: Turn on only if you’re traveling outside the US

    • Voice & Data: Choose 5G or LTE

    • Low Data Mode: Turn on to reduce data usage

Have two active SIMs? Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data and turn on Allow Cellular Data Switching to let your phone use either line for data.

Android

Menu names vary by brand (Samsung, Pixel, OnePlus, and others), but the steps are nearly the same on recent versions of Android.

  1. Open Settings and tap Network & Internet, Connections, or SIMs & Network

  2. Tap Mobile Network

  3. Turn on Mobile Data

  4. Check your options:

    • Turn on Data Roaming only if you’re traveling outside the US

    • Set your Preferred Network Type to 5G or LTE

Still Not Working?

Try these in order:

  1. Airplane Mode: Make sure it’s off

  2. Restart: Power your phone off and back on

  3. SIM: Confirm it’s inserted correctly (physical SIM) and active

  4. APN settings: Make sure your APN is set to Helium-Mobile. See Setting Your APN

  5. Plan and data: Check your plan is active and you have data available. You can check your SIM status and usage in the Helium Mobile app

  6. Software update:

    • iPhone: Settings > General > Software Update

    • Android: Settings > System > System Update

  7. Reset network settings (this also clears saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords):

    • iPhone: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings

    • Android: Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset Wi-Fi, Mobile & Bluetooth
